چکیده

Using area under the contracture curve to quantitate contrac tures, the diffusion coefficient of calcium ions within the frog toe muscle during washout in a calcium-free solution and subsequent recovery after reintroduction of calcium to the bathing solution was calculated to be about 2 X 10-6 cm2 /sec. The diffusion coefficient measured during washout was found to be independent of temperature or initial calcium ion concentration. During recovery it was found to decrease if the temperature was lowered. This was likely due to the repolarization occurring after the depolarizing effect of the calcium-free solution. The relation between contracture area and [Ca] was found to be useful over a wider range than that between maximum tension and [Ca]o. The normalized contracture areas were larger at lower calcium concentrations if the contractures were produced with cold potassium solutions or if NOs replaced C1 in the bathing solutions. Decreasing the potassium concentration of the contracture solution to 50 mM from 115 mM did not change the relation between [Ca]o and the normalized area. If the K concentration of the bathing solution was increased, the areas were decreased at lower concentrations of Ca.

The effects of extracellular calcium removal on sino-atrial node cells treated with potassium-depleted solutions.

The effect of extreme calcium reduction was studied in rabbit sino-atrial node cells treated with K-free media. Ca removal (Ca = 0, EGTA = 6 mM) suppressed spontaneous miniature fluctuations elicited by exposure to the K-free media. Further, successive exposure to the Ca-free, EGTA solutions produced a propagated action potential and suppressed a contracture. The action potential was not notice...

Sodium and calcium interactions in vascular smooth muscle cells of the rabbit ear artery

The effects of Na-free and of K-free solutions on the membrane potential, on tension development, and on 45Ca exchange have been investigated in rabbit ear artery. The contraction induced by Na-free solutions and the tension which develops in K-free solutions after a delay of about 1 h are both submaximal. Exposure for 4 h to K-free solutions does not affect the membrane potential, whereas Na-f...

PREVALENCE OF HYPERCALCEMIA AND HYPERCALCIURIA IN THYROTOXIC PATIENTS OF A REFERRAL ENDOCRINE CLINIC

Many patients with thyrotoxicosis develop hypercalciuria and nypercalcemia. Urine calcium excretion depends on diet, latitude and sunshine exposure. With regard to variation of these indices in different geographical regions, we conducted a one-year study on 202 patients, 65 males and 137 females, with thyrotoxicosis of varying severity. The mean age of patients was 35.24±11.95 and 35.87±1...

Extracellular ionic composition alters kinetics of vesicular release of catecholamines and quantal size during exocytosis at adrenal medullary cells.

The temporal resolution of carbon-fiber microelectrodes has been exploited to examine the plasticity of quantal secretory events at individual adrenal medullary cells. The size of individual quantal events, monitored by amperometric oxidation of released catecholamines, was found to be dependent on the extracellular ionic composition, the secretagogue, and the order of depolarization delivery. ...
